Aerin Holt presents

In Association with California Contemporary Ballet

From the creators of the popular ballet the “Snow Queen”. This magical story is brought to life by a company of remarkable power and passion. Featuring a unique blend of contemporary and classical dance with a dramatic original musical score. Bring the entire family and share the experiences of a tiny girl as she travels through a world of adventure, friendship and ultimate happiness. With set design perfectly suited for a fairy and a story inspired by Hans Christian Andersen, this spring-time ballet can’t be missed!

Original Music by
Dwight Bernard Mikkelsen
Original Choreography by
Aerin Holt
in collaboration with
Lynn Bryson Pittenger

Since the premiere performance in June 2013, California Contemporary Ballet has been inundated with expressions of excitment for their newest ballet, Thumbelina. An out-pouring of inquiries and cries for a repeat performance has compelled the company to bring Thumbelina back for a second season. A story of adventure, romance and character, this charming fairy tale proves that even the tiniest of us all can make a huge impact! Please see our audience reviews.

“From the opening moments to the grand finale I was transported into a world of living enchantment; was in that world completely and totally, a world which the director-choreographer, Aerin Holt, together with composer Dwight Mikkelsen have so skillfully created. Being more of a science-fiction fan; not – generally – into the so–called “fantasy” genre, It’s with enthusiastic and deep sincerity to say I was literally enraptured by the piece. The choreography, costumes, music, and execution by the performers all worked together under the direction of Aerin Holt, to result in a truly wonderful experience. Dwight Mikkelsen’s score, which magically propels and supports the story and the dancing / stage-action, was skillfully and realistically executed using samples and synths, to simulate a “live” orchestra, in a computer-recorded sequence, but, really, this music should be performed by a full orchestra, preferably our own marvelous Los Angeles Philharmonic, in a full production at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The lead soloists were brilliant at unfolding and telling us the story, thru’ their highly-skilled dance-footwork, mime, and graceful – at times, seemingly antigravitational -acrobatics, and … I was blown away by the bravura of ensemble pieces: the “Young Beetles” and the tower, particularly amazing; the group choreographies of all the ensembles so well executed … the little “Dew Drops” and “Young Fairies” enchantingly and humorously adorable. All in all, a wonderful show!” Paul Buckmaster, Composer

” It was Fantastic. I think it was the most enjoyable night I have EVER spent in the theatre. Your original choreography, so well executed by your talented dance troupe, told an enchanting story, set off by the beautiful backdrops and amazing props. The costumes were exquisite, the colors and set design absolutely beautiful. Your production entirely engaged the audience from the first musical note to the last claps. Supporting you in your vision for Thumbelina has made me proud to be a patron of California Contemporary Ballet Company, and you can count on my support for your future efforts.” H. Lee Peterson, Film Editor

“I saw Thumbelina on Sunday. Packed house. Wonderful production. Really imaginative work by Aerin Holt. Loved the choreography! Jackie Speas Stryker danced the lead. She is so strong! Always dancing full-out. Alyssa Michell, danced as an acrobatic aerial Spider and a gorgeous variation as the Queen of the Faries. The whole production was really great. Another stand out was a young ballerina, Kelinda White, who danced the part of the Swallow. Definite star! Congrats to Aerin for another hit.” Shelly Koss Freeman

“SPECTACULAR, BREATHTAKING, LOVED EVERY MINUTE!!! It left me with a loss-for-words to express how glorious, beautiful, spectacular the ballet was, in every way, your music (!!!), the fantastic dancing at the most pro levels, the costumes and set and aerial and other effects! We adored every minute!!!! An instant classic. Can’t wait to see it every year!” Carol Worthey, Composer & Writer
